Pengen Latah

at November 26th, 2012 by | permalinkpermalink | category Posted in inspiration

#GoBakeGiveaway judulnya. Hadiahnya lucu-lucuuuu, jadilah saya ngeramein arena :D  Dan setelah isi komen, trus kok jadi pengen ya bikin giveaway juga. Kan katanya.. share and you’ll be blessed yaaaa.

Yukk.. saya pikir-pikir dulu apa ya tema untuk giveaway nya. Any suggestion?

My Very Bestfriend

at November 24th, 2012 by | permalinkpermalink | category Posted in Bohemian Rhapsody

I realize that I don’t really talk much about people in my closest circle. The truth is I have a very bestfriend who is special at many levels. Our friendship is so special because we can prove that things that many consider impossible are possible and in fact, exist in harmony. It’s been going for over 15 years and it will keep on going nicely I’m sure. So what’s so special about us and our friendship?

For a start, my bestfriend is a male. A man. A being said to be from Mars, while I’m from Venus. While commonly believed that it’s impossible for a man and woman to have a close friendship beyond cordiality because at some point one/both of them would fall in love with the other, it didn’t happen to us. Thank goodness, otherwise it would be awkward. Yet, we really care for each other, like a sister caring for her brother. Like when he received his PhD, I was as proud as his blood sisters (he has two who also are friends of mine).

I, we both, remember vividly how we first got in contact and then met. He called me, who was president of PERMIAS then, to introduce himself as new Indonesian student in our campus. Then I invited him to come over to my apartment for lunch as I was cooking Sop Buntut. My doorbell rang 15 minutes later and there was a big guy with long hair done-up like konde standing in front of me. I invited him in and we just clicked instantly, a new friendship took off. We hung out together a lot, went for movies, potluck parties, college football games, and yet we maintained separate personal lives. I dated one..two..ehem..guys and he was in “like” (love such a strong word) with a girl living in a different town through our whole undergrad period.

Then we graduated and moved to different cities, different states even, to continue our study. He moved to Wisconsin, and I to New York. I thought distance would dilute away our friendship but turned out it didn’t. We maintained regular contacts by phone and emails. We often served as alarm to each other when each of us had to be up at a certain hour by giving each other a wake-up call. I often asked him to call me at midnight so I could write papers, or he would ask me to give him very early morning wake-up call so he wouldn’t be late for Sunday mass. It worked so well because we lived in different timezones.

And I just revealed another reason why our friendship is special. We have different beliefs, religion-wise. He’s a Catholic and I’m a Muslim. Yet, we never got into a debate let alone a fight about our beliefs. We discuss a few issues related to our religions but never exchange bickering remarks. We just respect and support each other. He came to my parents house when my big family celebrated Eid there, took family pictures with my mom’s big family. And in return, my sister and I, or my little family and me would come to his house for a Christmas dinner.

Before I got married, we have taken holiday trips together. And after I have my own little family, he becomes friend with Kris as well. We tried as much as possible to be present at important events in our lives. We continue to have lunch together occasionally and the last one we had was yesterday. We had an easy chat and shared a few laughs. It was a nice jolly time like always. And today is his birthday. Let’s raise a toast to wish my bestfriend a long happy healthy and successful life.

Happy birthday, Yosef!
